I have not been asked to write this post, these are 100% my own thoughts

If you use multiple devices across work and daily life, you’ve probably needed to transfer files between them at some point. Sure, email, cloud storage, and USB sticks are all options but they each have their downsides. Email has file size limits and is slow, cloud storage requires logging in (which often means dealing with two-factor authentication), and USB sticks…? Just no.

Apple solved this problem within its own ecosystem with AirDrop, and honestly, it’s one of the best features they’ve created. The catch? It only works within the Apple ecosystem. If you’re not fully locked into that world, you’re left searching for an alternative.

I wanted something as seamless as AirDrop but without the Apple lock-in. Enter Blip!

Features

  1. Works Everywhere – Blip supports Android, iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Windows, so you can transfer files between any device—no restrictions.

  2. Fast Transfers – Whether it’s a video, a batch of photos, or a massive report, Blip handles file transfers effortlessly, with no noticeable slowdowns.

  3. No File Size Limits – From 2MB to 200GB, Blip doesn’t impose any restrictions on file sizes.

  4. Send to Anyone, Anywhere – Unlike AirDrop, which is limited to Apple devices, Blip lets you send files to anyone, no matter what platform they’re on.

  5. Clean & Simple UI – The interface is straightforward with no confusing menus or complex setup. Just drag and drop on your computer or tap a few buttons on your phone.

  6. Secure & Private – Blip takes security seriously, offering end-to-end encryption, so your files remain private between you and the recipient. The company also appears transparent about data collection, which is reassuring.

  7. Works Without Internet – Blip supports offline transfers using Bluetooth or local Wi-Fi, so you’re not reliant on an internet connection. Plus, it prioritises local networks to avoid eating into your mobile data.

My Experience

Speed & Performance

Speed is something I have not been disappointed with. While I haven't done extensive testing all of the transfers I have done (Photos, videos & Zip files etc.) are all carried out within seconds or minutes depending on the size. Basically, it doesn't stop me from getting on with what I want to be doing.

Ease of Setup & Use

Setup is straight forward. Install, create an account & install on your other devices. Once, you have multiple devices associated to your account they show up on the homes screen. Allowing you to easily send data from one device to the next.

Cross-Platform Experience

So far, Blip has been rock-solid. I haven’t encountered failed transfers, app crashes, or any unexpected issues. Every file I’ve sent has arrived without corruption or delays, making it a tool I can rely on without second-guessing.

My Thoughts

Blip has quickly become a staple in my daily workflow. It fills a gap I’ve been looking to solve for a long time, allowing me to move files freely between my devices without the usual headaches. After using it for a while, I can confidently say it has exceeded my expectations, and I now have it installed across all my devices.

That said, while Blip is incredibly useful, it’s not quite as seamless as AirDrop. This isn’t a fault of the app itself, Apple has deep access to system-level integrations that third-party developers simply don’t. Given those limitations, I think the Blip team has done an outstanding job. However, when I’m working entirely within the Apple ecosystem, I still find myself defaulting to AirDrop. The tighter integration and the convenience of built-in AirDrop menus make it the natural choice in those situations.

One area where I think Blip could improve is hotkey support. I’d love the ability to trigger file sharing instantly using a global shortcut rather than navigating through menus. I’ve already raised this suggestion with the developers on their Discord, and they seem open to the idea. However, being a third-party app, implementing this kind of system-wide functionality may be tricky. Still, I hope to see it added in a future update, as it would make the experience even smoother.

Wrap up

If you’re looking for a fast, cross-platform alternative to AirDrop, Blip is worth trying. It’s simple, reliable, and removes the usual barriers that come with transferring files between different ecosystems. While it may not have the deep system integration of AirDrop, it comes remarkably close and the fact that it works across all major platforms makes it a powerful tool for anyone juggling multiple devices.
